Learnspace Corby
This project, which was commissioned by the Education Funding Agency (EFA), transformed a warehouse unit into an education based research and development centre, together with a small training area. The LearnSpace is used to experiment with and understand how spaces affect children’s learning. Teachers and students are able to experiment to develop best practice techniques, layouts and designs. A significant number of partners were committed to the refurbishment of this building to create a dynamic and flexible space for research and training in the practice of teaching.
The proposal was developed to maximise the efficiency of space within the existing building envelope while being as flexible as possible. The building is open plan with the ability to subdivide the spaces with a series of folding screens and furniture.
The overall concept of the design has provided an opportunity to reconfigure and visually improve a sub-standard building. A new street façade both secures access to the external area and plays a visual game between internal and external spaces.
