Oakley Vale Primary School
GSSArchitecture were commissioned by Lend Lease Consulting, on behalf of Northamptonshire County Council, to design a new 420-pupil primary school to cater for a steady increase in demand for school places in the town. The School is operated by Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust, under the name of Corby Primary Academy, and since opening it has already achieved an Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating.
The new school has fourteen classrooms, for pupils aged five to eleven, along with dining facilities, office accommodation, external play areas and car parking. Being built on a former quarry ground, meant substantial ground-strengthening works were required. To further lessen the likelihood of subsidence, the building is of relatively lightweight construction, using minimal amounts of masonry, whilst still more than satisfying building regulation requirements for both thermal and acoustic insulation.
The building is designed to provide a flexible, modern and vibrant learning environment, to meet the demands of older pupils, as well as being an exciting and stimulating setting for the teaching of the early years curriculum.
