University of Reading – School of Architecture
GSSArchitecture were appointed as Architects and Lead Consultants for the School of Architecture at the University of Reading. The newly redeveloped historic building has become ‘home’ to the first cohort of Architecture students, who have 24-hour access to dedicated studio spaces and cutting-edge facilities, including 3D printing and an associated workshop. A café area and an external terrace are also available to increase the flexibility of the environment for both private and collaborative study.
By working closely with the University, and in particular the School of Architecture, many of the important features of the existing historic building have been retained. The introduction of an external ramp and a lift inside the building makes it accessible to all.
The Old Library has a unique character set in the middle of the grounds in the University. The redevelopment of the building reinvents the space, offering students an inspiring working environment. The project team worked hard to deliver a building that is sympathetic to its original character and will offer staff and students a welcoming hub for the new School of Architecture.
