Design Centre
Beauchamp College
Oadby, Leicestershire
This former 1960's building was completely stripped out, leaving just the shell, and completely re-fitted with new internal walls, ceilings, lighting, flooring and services. The new Design Centre has a dramatic, airy and sweeping internal design, incorporating a variety of spaces contained within curved walls. A central feature is a glazed mezzanine "pod" for ICT, reached via a central stairway. There are flexible teaching spaces while further ICT facilities are contained within individually-lit small cells recessed into the curved walls.
The Schools Commissioner, Sir Bruce Liddington, said, "This is the most innovative use of existing buildings that I have seen."
