Lowick House
St. Mary's Hospital, Kettering
This 25-bed residential psychiatric unit was split into two sections. A 10-bed element was for acute treatment of patients of all ages, including criminal referrals, and the remaining 15 places were for medium to long-term treatment.
The building was designed to convey a residential appearance, and was surrounded by gardens and landscape features. One end of the unit was sunk into the sloping ground, providing raised flowerbeds for patient use and therapy. Internally the design had security and resistance to damage very much in mind, whilst reflecting domestic levels of comfort, finishes and decorations.
