Since the 1820's the original school had undergone a series of ad-hoc extensions and alterations and the brief was to construct a new focal point entrance building (pictured), together with a new four-court sports hall and associated changing facilities, and six new science laboratories. There was also to be a major internal refurbishment.
This complex project, comprising 14 separate works, was carried out with the 1,200 student school in full operation throughout. It was completed on schedule.
