Together we can…grow

Our Team

What Our Team Say

“The support and guidance that I’ve had, and continue to gain, from the wider team during my apprenticeship has helped me to develop a well-rounded level of professional experience which is essential at this final stage of the qualification.”

“The social aspect of the Practice is fantastic. The regular staff events are a great way for all offices to get together, let our hair down and celebrate our achievements.”

“GSS & apprenticeships make me believed that I can be an architect! The support from GSSArchitecture makes everything easier and less stressful. In addition to support with my studies, I am gaining first-hand experience in the profession and building my confidence and skillset.”

“35 years have flown by! The fast paced varied workload, combined with the support of a great team results in a fun, enjoyable and challenging working environment.”

Investors in People

As a Practice we are driven by collaboration, which relies on the support of dedicated, motivated and talented employees. As recognised Investors in People (IIP), the Practice places great emphasis on providing a welcoming and supportive environment for our team members to develop and thrive both professionally and personally.

Rewards & Recognition

We encourage, recognise and value the hard work, commitment and achievements of our people, with many regularly going above and beyond to ensure high quality in all that we do.

Rewarding staff both individually and as a team is integral to our cross-practice culture and our in-house Rewards and Recognition Working Group are responsible for developing and promoting the best ways to reward team members. Our teams are able to benefit from a wide variety of rewards including; long service awards, agile working, our continuous professional development programme, attendance vouchers, regular office events, team socials and corporate social responsibility days.

Wellbeing

As architects, we have a responsibility to create spaces that have a positive impact on the people who use them, including promoting the wellbeing of our teams. We also understand the importance of supporting our own people’s mental health and wellbeing through workplace initiatives coordinated by our in-house Health and Wellbeing Working Group and dedicated Wellbeing Champions.

Team Events

We place great importance on regularly bringing together all six offices to relax, have fun, and celebrate our achievements as a Practice, recognising and rewarding the team’s hard work.

In the past we have scaled The O2 in London, visited the Botanical Gardens in Birmingham, enjoyed activity days, including archery and segway racing, and taken in the sights with a boat cruise down the Thames.

Client Events

We pride ourselves on building strong relationships with our clients and project teams, and thoroughly enjoy hosting annual events where we celebrate successes and project achievements.

With five events each year, we are able to provide our clients and consultant teams with a great environment to network and meet new contacts within the industry.

Team Challenges

Our teams love a challenge, and what better way to encourage their competitive side than through our staff challenges. Taking part in an activity whilst raising money for great causes is a fantastic way to boost morale and improve wellbeing within our teams.

Previously, we have undertaken the National Three Peaks Challenge, 140 mile Coast to Coast (C2C) bike ride and a Hadrian’s Wall hike, amongst many other challenges.

Training & Development

We are fully committed to investing in the continued training and development of all our teams. An effective training and development programme offers real value for everyone. It helps people keep up to date with developments and changes in the industry, facilitates professional career development, delivers a better-quality service, and results in more satisfied clients.

To that end, we hold Investors in People (IIP) Gold accreditation and have held the IIP standard continuously since 1997. Our approach to training and development is structured around a formal annual appraisal process that is put in place for everyone throughout the Practice.

We recognise that everyone’s needs are unique and this is reflected in a personalised training and development programme that is reviewed at least twice a year.

Degree Apprenticeships

We work in partnership with a number of universities and colleges up and down the country that offer degree apprenticeships. These are a new type of programme that offer our people the opportunity to study for either a full bachelor’s or master’s degree whilst working part-time.

All our apprentices are employed throughout the programme, and are committed to spending 20% of the week in formal training, and the remainder of their time is spent working on live projects and learning on the job. Depending on the specific course requirements, courses can take between three to six years to complete.

If a degree apprenticeship is something that you think would be right for you, please get in touch with your local office lead.

Targeted Learning

Depending on the needs of the individual, it is important to consider targeted learning that supports longer term career development and personal growth. This could include specific Revit courses, BIM learning or other similar software courses, as well as management and development training.

In addition to these, all teams attend an annual health and safety training workshop, that is led by the Practice health and safety lead. This also includes updates on specific health and safety issues that may be relevant and is also used as an ideal platform to remind all staff about fundamental working practices around issues such as asbestos.

A well-informed and well-equipped team is much better placed to assist our clients and provide the right advice and guidance to project teams.

Student Mentoring Scheme

We operate an active student mentoring scheme, delivered in partnership with the RIBA. Across our offices, we are currently mentoring four Part I Architecture students as they complete their courses, meaning that they are able to gain knowledge and experience through regular contact with our fully qualified architects, as well as being able to benefit from visiting sites and acquiring critically important exposure to live working projects.

CPD Sessions

Regardless of what point you are at in your career, learning never stops. We operate a coordinated CPD programme across the Practice that helps our teams keep up to date with current industry issues and helps them maintain the minimum CPD levels required by their professional bodies.

Our CPD programme includes:

  • In-house seminars delivered by specialist RIBA accredited manufacturers/suppliers.
  • In-house seminars delivered by our staff.
  • Architecture study visits.
  • Contribution/involvement with industry-led seminars and workshops.
  • Virtual building tours.
