University of Reading – Sports Centre Refurbishment
GSSArchitecture were appointed as Architects to design a new sports centre at the University of Reading.
The project involved demolishing two squash courts to provide space for a two-storey extension to an existing building. Both areas were fully refurbished and combined to provide a state-of-the-art sports centre with cutting edge facilities. All changing and toilet facilities were also refurbished and upgraded, together with special facilities to allow for disabled access, including a platform lift to link both floors.
The new sports centre is equipped with a variety of cardio vascular and weight training equipment, supported by high quality audio-visual monitors and speakers to help maintain the dynamics in the area. A key design feature is the special coloured wall lighting, which helps to provide a unique atmosphere.
The sports centre also has a large sports hall which provides facilities for five-a-side football, badminton, basketball, volleyball, hockey and indoor cricket. It provides a valuable resource to the local community as well as to university students and staff.
