Durham University – University College
University College occupies the Grade I Listed Durham Castle which dates from 1072 and is situated at the heart of Durham’s World Heritage Site adjacent to Durham Cathedral. GSSArchitecture were responsible for leading the design of the extensive restoration and renovation works to the interior of the castle, including The Great Hall, Kitchen, Servery, Castle Keep, Hall and Junction Stair accommodation.
The approach was to retain, reinforce and enhance the historic layout and fabric as an integral part of the refurbishment process. The Great Hall itself received a new solid oak floor whilst careful restoration of decoration finishes, including precious stained glass windows, were undertaken in other areas of the castle. The project also required a full and sensitive renewal of heating, power and data systems.
The Kitchen and Servery were fully refitted to current standards within their historic shells, whilst the bedroom accommodation was completely remodelled to include en-suite facilities. In all cases works were undertaken in close co-ordination with the Conservation Officer and English Heritage. There is no doubt that the work to the Castle has helped to ensure its long-term future and represents a significant investment in this well-loved building.
