King James’s School – New Fitness Suite & Changing Facilities
The works comprised the refurbishment, reconfigurations and upgrading of the school’s existing Boy’s and Girl’s Gym and changing facilities. In addition, the works also include the formation of a new fitness suite, adaptation of the existing entry covered way and the installation of a new entrance canopy.
The existing accommodation was very out-dated; circulation routes were monotonous and oppressive whilst the changing rooms were poorly laid out, in bad condition and generally unfit for purpose. The client, King James’s School, is a forward thinking institution with a fresh approach to education and they wanted this to reflect in the design of the fitness suite and changing rooms.
The scheme has opened up circulation routes, and injected energy into the spaces, through the use of bold colours and cubist ceiling and floor features. Corridors have been remodelled to improve circulation and provide small areas for displays and social interaction. The fitness suite also incorporates abstract ceiling features, which help improve the acoustic performance of the space, whilst large areas of glazing and exposed soffits all contribute to the light, airy and contemporary environment.
