The provision of Special Educational Needs (SEN) facilities across Northamptonshire was highlighted by Northamptonshire County Council as an area in need of development. GSSArchitecture were appointed as Lead Consultants, Architects and Quantity Surveyors to design a school that would cater for children with specialist social, emotional and mental health (SEMH). (Previously BESD)
The specialist needs of the children and unprecedented facilities on one site provided a challenge that would see two years of development before work started on site. Paramount to the success of the project was a close working relationship between GSS, the client and end users to gain a full understanding of their specialist teaching and particular behaviours.
The project achieved BREEAM very good standard, incorporating a number of sustainable and energy efficient features, including a Sedum roof, solar thermal heating, biomass boilers and rainwater harvesting. In addition to this, the buildings are used by the local community.
The environment and special needs of the client created a brief that enabled GSS to provide a bespoke and exciting design that inspires staff and students alike.
