University of Leeds – School of Geography and Faculty of Bio-Sciences
GSSArchitecture were commissioned for the complex refurbishment of the School of Geography at the University of Leeds.
This involved the remodelling of an existing 1960’s building of significant architectural merit (Grade II Listed), using design and build procurement. Extending over five floors and across five connected buildings, the accommodation links three separate schools and academic departments, including the School of Geography, the School of Environment Sciences and the Faculty of Biological Sciences.
The interior redevelopment included flexible and collaborative spaces, including laboratories and ‘traditional’ teaching space all designed to be ‘future-proofed’ to adapt to future demands. Opening up the buildings helped to create a ‘bright and welcoming’ building with professional and sophisticated facilities, and maximised the use of the building footprint – a concept referred to as the ‘Third Space’. The use of glass and large open plan areas also increases flexibility and visibility.
