We are delighted to be able to congratulate Gabriele Adomaityte, Architectural Assistant at GSS, for recently being awarded the 2019 RIBA East Midlands Part 2 Student award, for her University work titled ‘The Singing Valley Project’.
The RIBA East Midlands Student Awards celebrate the talent and dedication of architecture students in local Schools, to reward them in their pursuit of excellence in the study of architecture. Gabriele was put forward by the De Montfort University, Leicester, School of Architecture, where she recently completed her part-time studies and graduated from MArch with a distinction, which she completed whilst also working at our Milton Keynes office!
The winning project focuses on Cwmorthin Valley, a former quarry in Wales. These Welsh quarries were the birthplace of the Welsh male voice choirs, and the proposed design for this project was heavily influenced by this history. The architecture focused on allowing sounds from the underground performance spaces to escape in to the valley, playing on the idea of Wales being referred to as ‘The Land of Song’. The overall proposed layout reflects the history of the valley and elegantly joins to the existing quarry, as the culture of this area was very much the main drive behind the project.
Speaking about her recent award, Gabriele said: “I feel very honoured to win the RIBA East Midlands Region Student award. Part time studying was really hard work, sometimes pushing me to the limits, therefore it is nice to be acknowledged and rewarded for the work that I have put in. I could not give enough thanks to my tutors, Ben Cowd and Tim Barwell at DMU, for the encouragement and advice they have given me, as well as my GSS Milton Keynes team for the continuous support throughout my studies.”
GSS currently support 10 members of staff who are carrying out year-out placements, studying part-time to become fully qualified or on apprenticeship schemes or work experience, working within Architecture, Architectural Technology, Quantity Surveying, Project Management, Graphic Design, ICT and Business Administration. At GSS we are committed to helping guide those at the start of their careers, and support them throughout their studies, so it is great to see one of the team getting rewarded for the hard work they have put in.
