Northampton Museum VR Tour

GSSArchitecture’s in house graphics team, 3DLABS, have produced a Virtual Reality (VR) tour showing the planned refurbishment and extension of Northampton Museum & Art Gallery.

This innovative approach delivers engaging and interactive content to demonstrate design intent to clients.

The works to the museum involve connecting and linking 3 buildings by adding a strategic courtyard extension. GSS have worked to reveal and incorporate the existing architecture to create a unique series of spaces. Many of these spaces could not be viewed together before works started and so the VR tour has been a key tool to allow the client team to visualise the proposed design.

Although this tour is extensive, including 7 separate viewpoints, it does not cover the entirety of the redevelopment works. The exhibition areas are not covered by the tour, instead it covers the important connecting spaces between the galleries. Including the modern extension designed to create a new shoe gallery to showcase the museum’s world renowned collection. In addition, a temporary exhibition gallery, events space, café and link space can also be viewed.

Councillor Anna King, Cabinet member for community engagement, said: “this innovative VR tour is both engaging and interactive, and gives a really good idea of what people will see once the museum and art gallery is open. We’re particularly excited about the huge atrium space, which will provide a stunning new communal area, linking the various parts of the building together. Work on this space has already started in reality, but this extensive VR tour shows just what a vast area it will be once complete.”
