Significant Expansion of South Shields Crematorium Approved

Plans have recently been approved for a significant refurbishment and extension at South Shields Crematorium, which will increase the building capacity by 126, to over 200 people overall.

Working alongside South Tyneside Council and Ward Robinsons, our plans for the 1960s building involve extending into the existing internal courtyard, rearranging pews to provide better sight lines and creating a partition between the existing chapel and the extension, which would be utilised when required for smaller services. In addition, the plans include a full refurbishment and redecoration of the existing chapel, entrance and exit lobby and waiting area to provide a modern facility for services.

Collaboration with the rest of the project team has been essential in order to ensure disruption to services is minimised where possible throughout the refurbishment period. With Surgo Construction recently being appointed as contractors for the scheme, we are looking forward to work starting on site early in 2022.

A CGI, produced by 3DLABS, shows the plans for this upcoming extension in comparison to the existing chapel. Keep an eye out for updates on this project as it progresses.
